Self-referential food

It would be interesting if food referenced itself, in a kind of meta way.

Yesterday I saw that a friend was eating little gummy bears made with gelatin, and I thought that this represented a missed opportunity.

After all, from a certain perspective, the ideal shape for gelatin candies would be cute little horses’ hooves.

This may not, in fact, be a marketable idea. 🙂

  1. This reminds me of the part in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (part of the Hitchhiker’s guide series) when the characters arrive at said restaurant. The waiters bring out their food, which is at this point still alive. The animals then proceed to explain to the characters why it is such an honour that they are about to be eaten. They are so happy, it’s just the most fulfilling moment in their lives, to be consumed by these customers. That is literally “self-referential food.”

Speaking of which, if steakhouses cut their steaks to be shaped like cute little cows and their pork chops like piglets, would people consider not eating them?
