A deep coincidence

Next Sunday many people are going to be writing about the sinking of the Titanic.

I thought it would be nice if at least one person celebrated a somewhat more hopeful moment: Today is the 100th anniversary of that great ship’s maiden voyage out of Southampton on her way across the Atlantic.

This is also an occasion to note the following numerological oddity: The ship sank in the year ’12, on 4/15 (on Sunday, when we commemorate the anniversary of that great tragedy, it will of course also be the year ’12, on 4/15).

And where now lies the wreck of the RMS Titanic? Down under the sea, at a depth of exactly 12,415 feet.

Mere coincidence?

  1. The coincidence about the depth/date thing is very cool, but yes, I believe “mere coincidence”.

  2. Mere coincidence?

100 years (to the day) after any date will be the same 2-digit year, same month and same date. By definition.

And why is it a coincidence that on 15/4/12, the Titanic sank eventually reaching (probably not on the same day?) a depth of 3.78km?

You may recall that when the Bible Code author was told that the code was just a result of the statistics of large numbers of words, he replied that you should be able to find predictions in Moby Dick. And so people promptly did.

Humanity is on a relentless search for meaning in the meaningless, when the meaningful is right there on the sofa with them.
