{"id":14900,"date":"2014-06-23T21:33:59","date_gmt":"2014-06-24T02:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/?p=14900"},"modified":"2014-06-23T21:33:59","modified_gmt":"2014-06-24T02:33:59","slug":"well-regulated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/?p=14900","title":{"rendered":"Well regulated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been pondering this statement recently.  It&#8217;s clear that a lot of people in this country like this amendment.  The National Rifle Association, which has dedicated much money and effort to defending the &#8220;right to bear arms&#8221;, has the support of many politicians and citizens in our nation.<\/p>\n<p>But the part that confuses me is this:  I keep looking around for that well-regulated militia.  The amendment is quite unambiguous that the need for such a militia is the entire reason for this amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Yet as far as I can tell, many people are walking around bearing arms without serving in such a militia.  In fact (as hard as this may be to believe), it seems that there <i>is<\/i> no such militia.<\/p>\n<p>So what the heck is going on here?
