{"id":4110,"date":"2010-07-17T01:35:01","date_gmt":"2010-07-17T06:35:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/?p=4110"},"modified":"2010-07-18T10:22:06","modified_gmt":"2010-07-18T15:22:06","slug":"feeling-sorry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/?p=4110","title":{"rendered":"Feeling sorry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The most interesting recent comment &#8212; by far &#8212; on this blog was the following statement by Troy about a week or so ago:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;Please don\u2019t take this as negatively as it may sound, but, being a voracious omnivore\u2026 I am not critical of people for making the choice to not eat meat, or just not red meat, or only free-range meat, or, only meat that died of natural causes\u2026 Everyone has their reasons, and I respect that\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But, I do feel sorry for them. That\u2019s not meant to be as arrogant, accusatory, or holier-than-thou as it sounds, it\u2019s simply a truthful statement. I know that they (vegetarians\/vegans\/pescaterians\/lactose intollerant) don\u2019t need or want to be felt sorry for, but, I truly do. Going through life tasting everything, including the forbidden fruit, makes me a richer person. I don\u2019t care what it is, if there\u2019s a culture on the planet that treats it as food, I\u2019ll eat it.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What is wonderful about this comment is that Troy is floating the idea that one person&#8217;s likes or dislikes is based on the negation of another person&#8217;s likes or dislikes.<\/p>\n<p>I thought it would be interesting to explore alternative viewpoints that push Troy&#8217;s central premise that &#8220;I feel sorry for you if you do not like the things I like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So here is an example of the sort of thing Troy is saying, recontextualized:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;Please don\u2019t take this as negatively as it may sound, but, being a voracious homosexual\u2026 I am not critical of people for making the choice to not make love to men, or just not really cute men, or only men that work out a lot, or, only men that kiss really well\u2026 Everyone has their reasons, and I respect that\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But, I do feel sorry for them. That\u2019s not meant to be as arrogant, accusatory, or holier-than-thou as it sounds, it\u2019s simply a truthful statement. I know that they (heterosexuals, Catholics, breeders) don\u2019t need or want to be felt sorry for, but, I truly do. Going through life tasting everything, including the forbidden fruit of another man&#8217;s love, makes me a richer person.
