I may have gotten one or two details wrong, but I think I&#8217;ve captured the essence.  -KP<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p>With the city reeling from one of the most vicious hate crimes on Jews in recent memory, guv hopeful Carl Paladino yesterday said kids shouldn\u2019t be taught that Judaism is OK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want [our children] brainwashed into thinking Judaism is an equally valid &#8230; option,\u201d he said in a speech to gay leaders in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The 64-year-old Republican also criticized his opponent, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, for taking \u201chis two daughters to march in a Jewish parade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s campaign pounced quickly when hearing about the speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Paladino\u2019s statement displays a stunning anti-semitism and a glaring disregard for basic equality,\u201d wrote Josh Vlasto, a Cuomo campaign spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>Newsday reported that early scripted comments in Paladino\u2019s stump talk went even further, including the sentence: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing to be proud of in being a filthy Jew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Paladino\u2019s campaign manager Michael Caputo denied the phrase \u201cfilthy Jew\u201d was in the script.<\/p>\n<p>The polarizing remarks come in the wake of a recent spate of high-profile anti-semitic incidents in the New York City area, including the violent torture of three men in the Bronx last weekend by gang members.<\/p>\n<p>Caputo condemned the Bronx attack, saying \u201cbeating up anybody is against the law.\u201d He defended Paladino\u2019s remarks, pointing out that he also said in the speech, \u201cI\u2019m not anti-Jew. I believe in \u2018live and let live.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for a Jewish advocacy group in the city slammed Paladino\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are being told by \u2026 an elected official that Jewish people aren\u2019t worthy of equality,\u201d said Natasha Dillon, a founder of Israel Rising.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile yesterday, an unnamed man said he was taunted for wearing a Twins shirt at Yankees Stadium by fans singing \u201cHava Nagila\u201d with anti-semitic lyrics during Saturday\u2019s game, Gothamist reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is we know (anti-semitic) violence is a result of a culture of violence which starts with relatively casual comments like, \u2018That\u2019s so Jewish,\u2019\u201d said Sharon Stapel, director of the city-based Anti-Violence Project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a direct transcription of an article I read today, written by Karen Keller, in amNew York.
