{"id":7183,"date":"2011-09-25T19:58:40","date_gmt":"2011-09-26T00:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/?p=7183"},"modified":"2011-09-25T19:59:09","modified_gmt":"2011-09-26T00:59:09","slug":"musical-bits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/?p=7183","title":{"rendered":"Musical bits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was talking to some students about how a number that&#8217;s stored in a word of computer memory is made up of individual bits, where each bit is either on or off (ie: one or zero).<\/p>\n<p>To make this easier to understand, I created a little Java applet, which you can play with by clicking on the image below:<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/mrl.nyu.edu\/~perlin\/binary1 target=1><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.kenperlin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/binary1.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>But then as I started to play around with this applet, I found myself creating an image of a musical keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>That suggests an intriguing way to link numbers to music.
