After an intense and wonderful day “prototyping the future” with my collaborators, I am left with an interesting question: Am I collaborating with these people because I want to develop new ideas for the future, or do I want to develop new ideas for the future because it lets me collaborate with these people?
Of course these two questions cannot be totally disentangled from each other. We are inspired by our collaborators, and that inspiration leads to new discoveries. In a sense we are parents, bringing forth our children into the world. Except that those children are wondrous new ideas.
Fortunately I do not need to answer this question. I am in a beautiful professional relationship with brilliant and exciting people, and together we will have many children. What more could one ever ask for?
I can’t go outside without looking at the terrain on the ground and wondering what the noise values are. If you have any cure or remedy for Perlinitis, please tell me. In the meanwhile, you have my vote. Ken for president 2016.
Funny you should say that. When I first started creating noise-based procedural textures, I would sometimes catch myself staring up at the clouds and thinking about how I might code them.

My thoughts are that:
1) If you could develop the ideas yourself, because you could evolve in isolation with continual self-evolving knowledge, you would not need the others. It is only your need for different perspectives that keeps you engaged.
2) When any one’s ideas (in the group) are not evolving or cannot assimilate the new thought direction of the individual or group then they are of no use to the collaboration.
3) If your group remains static, without new external input from new members or the environment, then your children may cease be born. It is the imploding of theory due to lack of evolving new ideas that conflicts with the assimilation of a changing environment in which ideas exist fostering progression. A static group will run out of new thoughts.
