As I was saying, in Squaresville corners tend to act funny. The image below shows what happens when you check in on your neighbors to the northwest. Mr. Red, who lives to your west, is standing next to Mr. Blue, who lives to your north (his real name is Mr. Cyan, but he hates when people call him that). Because it takes only three turns to go around a corner, they are actually standing next to each other, side by side.
In the image below, you can see two distinct views of Mr. Red, and also two views of Mr. Blue, because that’s how light travels in Squaresville:

Also, I think I see what you are getting at with the illustration,
in terms of who is next to whom, but it is still a little confusing.
I don’t really understand what you’re saying about the way light travels.
Imagine a ray of light skimming along the surface of a cube. At some point it hits an edge of the face it has been traveling along.
Now imagine that rather than flying off into space, the light beam continues to hug the cube surface, so now it is skimming along the face that lies on the other side of that edge.
If you follow the path of that ray of light in your mind, you should be able to see the general idea.
