Three gifts I presented on this Mother’s Day,
\nEach one said something I wanted to say.<\/p>\n
Each wrapped in paper, and sealed with tape,
\nAll three were books of the same size and shape.<\/p>\n
Yet all were quite different in subject and tone,
\nFor each book was meant for one person alone.<\/p>\n
One showed how Yiddish evolved by degrees,
\nThe second, inventions by crazed Japanese.<\/p>\n
The third described answers by students in school
\nThat were all incorrect yet were funny and cool.<\/p>\n
A few folks who know me, from those clues I’m sure
\nWill figure out just who each present was for.<\/p>\n
And that, in a way, gets us right to the heart:
\nIt’s important to know — to know right from the start —<\/p>\n
That issues of wrapping, of size and of shape,
\nAre of no more import than the choice of Scotch tape.<\/p>\n
In giving a gift those are not the core mission.
\nThe key is that small spark of true recognition<\/p>\n
Which is why when we shop so much time is involved
\nUntil the true riddle of giving is solved:<\/p>\n
To find that best gift, the best one by far,
