That was essentially the start of our modern computer era.<\/p>\n<p>I remember some years ago visiting U. Penn when my host led me a room, and unlocked the door to let me inside. To my astonishment, I found myself looking at the control panels of the original ENIAC, and I felt a sense of profound awe.<\/p>\n<p>All six of the original programmers of that world&#8217;s first electronic computer were women. At the time, computer programming was considered clerical work, and male engineers looked down on this &#8220;subprofession&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Now, of course, we recognize how innovative these six women were.
