I knew about him only as the author of &#8220;The Red Badge of Courage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This might be just as well.  When I was in school, the below poem might have appeared incomprehensible. Now, of course, this poem makes perfect sense to me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In the desert<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I saw a creature, naked, bestial,<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; who, squatting upon the ground,<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Held his heart in his hands,<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; And ate of it.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I said, &#8220;Is it good, friend?&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &#8220;It is bitter &#8212; bitter,&#8221; he answered;<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &#8220;But I like it<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Because it is bitter,<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; And because it is my heart.&#8221; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, upon looking up a quote I had read in the newspaper, I discovered the wondrous and deeply thoughtful poetry of Stephen Crane.
