The joy of precision

I was comparing notes with some friends, and we found that we all have something in common. We achieve a kind of high by working on something that requires precision.

In my case it’s computer programming. If even one comma or parenthesis is out of place, your program simply will not run.

For somebody else it was practicing classical piano. For yet another it was draftsmanship.

But in all cases, the need to do something exactly right, without making any errors, creates a kind of psychological high. Once you get into the zone, you really want to stay there.

I know that there are many different ways of getting high. But this one has the nice advantage that you are actually getting stuff done.
