The illusion that everything is normal

One of the dangers of our nation’s current slide into fascism is the illusion that everything is normal. Millions of people are still watching the same TV shows and movies, listening to their favorite songs, driving their cars to work, buying groceries, and ordering stuff on-line from Amazon.

There is still a pervasive illusion that the ability of our executive branch to function is not being systematically dismantled, and that large numbers of people in this country are not being summarily rounded up and yanked from their homes without due process.

But still, you can sort of see how this might play out. Obviously the people doing these things have no chance to stay in power once midterm elections come around. They are simply doing too much damage to too many communities — especially in Red states.

Which may be why untrained goons wearing fake military garb are being sent into liberal cities to round up anybody who looks hispanic. Maybe the entire point is to rile up the citizenry, to goad Americans into fighting back.

At that point civil unrest can be declared, and martial law imposed. Of course elections would need to be suspended.

If this is so, then the question is: What can we do about it, while we still can? After the slide into fascism is complete, our options will become severely limited.
